StuG IV by Bernie Dietrich

Bernie found Dragon's 1/72 scale StuG IV a highly detailed kit replete with PE Schürtzen and even PE attachments for the Schürtzen!  And, it went together very well considering it's small size.

For the base color he used Vallejo German dark yellow over Vallejo grey primer. The tracks were painted with a 3:1 mixture of Vallejo black and German red brown then dry brushed with Vallejo Magnesium. The road wheels were painted with Vallejo tire black.  A pin wash of Tamiya panel line accent, and chipping with silver colored pencil and Vallejo magnesium paint were used to weather the model. Finally, Mig European earth and dark earth pigments were used to enhance the weathering.

The base is a piece of wood from Hobby Lobby painted Krylon rattle can black. The lower portion was taped off and a little Mod Podge was added to the upper surface. After force drying it with a hairdryer he painted the terrain with Mig earth brown. Next,  Mig dark earth and Europe earth pigments were added to achieve the desired texture.  Vallejo khaki pigment was then added to lighten the texture to show tracks in the earth. Finally,  self adhesive static grass tufts were set in place to finish the landscape.
As a final step, both the Stug and the base were sprayed with Vallejo satin varnish to seal in the decals and the earth texture.

Marder III Ausf.H by Bernie Dietrich

This is Italeri's 1/72 Marder III Ausf. H which Bernie built around 2017. It was an easier build than his StuG IV but still featured plenty of detail.

The vehicle's base color is Vallejo German yellow sealed with Vallejo satin varnish. A coat of hairspray force dried with a hairdryer was added prior to covering the model in Vallejo light grey. After letting that dry Bernie used an old toothbrush and water to remove the light grey to show a worn winter camouflage.

He used a small plastic case covered with modeling clay the terrain. The clay was smoothed out with water to get the ground to the correct shape. The rock in front of the Marder was made in a Woodland scenics rock mold with hydrocal plaster painted white.  He then placed Woodland scenic grass and bush on the clay and covered it all with Mig snow. Years later the clay detached from the plastic and shrank quite a bit.

Type LG3000 Mercedes Truck by Bernie Dietrich

Bernie's  ICM Type LG3000 Mercedes Truck.  Finishing involved priming with Vallejo grey primer followed by Panzer Dark Grey lightened with a couple different applications of Vallejo Neutral Grey to lighten the paint on the more weathered areas on the upper surfaces.  The model was then chipped lightly with Vallejo Gunship Grey followed by weathering with Mig Dark Earth and Europe Earth pigments.  A load of generic resin stowage was added to the bed.

M1128 Stryker MGS by Bernie Dietrich

Bernie's  AFV Club M1128 Stryker MGS was primed with Vallejo grey primer and painted with Vallejo USA Olive Drab lightened with Vallejo White in certain areas.  Mig Crystal Periscope Green was used on the glass.  The kit's real real rubber tires needed no paint but lots of Mig Sand pigment to dirty them up for a more authentic look. For a final touch, he used bare metal foil for the mirrors he keep knocking off.

15cm Sturm-Infanteriegeschutz 33 auf Pz III by Bernie Dietrich

Dragon's 1/35th scale 15cm  Sturm-Infanteriegeschutz 33 auf Pz III --- Bernie used the same paints and colors as his Dragon Elefant except this kit has rubber road wheels and the Elefant had steel road wheels.   The tracks are metal from MasterClub and, after building, they were washed in Dawn dish detergent to make sure machining oils were elimunated.  They were painted with three coats of black Vallejo primer to get a nice thick coverage.  A Vallejo gunmetal and rust mixture was then used to paint them.

Vallejo tire black and Tamiya medium rust and soot pigments were used on the muffler.  Bernie also used the kits decals and not dry transfers on this model.

Sd.Kfz 184 Elefant by Bernie Dietrich

Dragon Model's 1995 1/35th scale Sd.Kfz. 184 Elefant --- Bernie started by priming the assembled kit with Vallejo grey primer followed by Vallejo German Dark Yellow.   A coat of  Krylon gloss crystal clear was applied before adding Verlinden dry decal transfers. The decals were hit with a coat of Krylon flat clear followed by chipping with Vallejo Magnesium and Dark Yellow.
Tamiya panel line accent color black was used sparingly to accent hatches and rivets.  The tracks were primed in Vallejo black primer and then painted with a Vallejo Gunmetal and Rust mixture.  Next came a light dry brushing with Vallejo Steel.

Finally, Mig Europe Earth was used to dust the vehicle.  Bernie added a small scratch built wooden stowage shelf, a tool box (generic resin), and oil can on the skirt.  The wooden box is balsa painted with Vallejo Concrete and Golden Brown with a touch of brown to make the balsa look more realistic.

V100 Commando Armored Vehicle by Bernie Deitrich

Bernie built the Hobby Boss V100 Commando Vehicle (Vietnam version) out-of-the-box except for a set of resin wheels. Since the kit had a scant interior, he built it closed-up.
